Important Galvalume Steel Coil Specifications That You Need to Know Before Importing

Galvalume is considered a special imported product because the process of finding out information about the item is always complicated. Galvalume steel coil specifications always come with a series of dense data in terms of width, hardness, and thickness that importers need to learn carefully before conducting a transaction.

Technical Galvalume Steel Coil Specifications

The technical specifications are the evidence demonstrating the strength, toughness and mechanical properties of products. If you are an importer and do not know the basic specifications below before proceeding to trade the item, it is very easy to meet the situation of receiving the finished product not as expected.


The thickness is one of the important galvalume steel coils specifications in the information description table. The thickness will certainly affect the selling price, depending on a coil of steel thickness or thin that the factory will calculate a suitable price for the buyer. Sometimes importers require oversized thicknesses, which will make it difficult to find source because not all factories can meet the special requirement of thickness in production.

Currently, for Galvalume coils, the ideal thickness is usually in the range of 0.25 to 1.2 mm. The reason why is called the ideal thickness because this is the thickness range that most factories can produce and it is often widely applied in many fields.

Coating thickness symbol

Galvalume steel coil has 3 layers including base steel layer, aluminum zinc coating layer and color coating layer. Therefore, when viewing coating symbols, importers need to keep in mind a few definitions. There are 3 common coating thickness symbols in galvalume steel coils specifications used by steel manufacturers including BMT, TCT and APT.

  • BMT: reflects the thickness of the base steel layer, which is the inner steel core that has not undergone aluminum galvanizing processes. Therefore, if the galvalume coil is printed with BMT, the importer should understand this as the thickness symbol of the cold rolled coil.
  • TCT: The full name of TCT is Total Coating Thickness, which means that the thickness of the product will now include the base steel layer along with the galvanized layer.
  • APT: APT is the only symbol for prepainted galvalume steel coil products because APT stands for After Painting Thickness, the thickness of the steel product after color plating.


Besides the thickness, the width gauge size also plays an important role among galvalume steel coils specifications, the manufacturer will rely on these two parameters to calculate the weight of the steel coil. The common formula for calculating the weight of coiled steel applied by many factories today is

m (kg) = T (mm) x W (mm) x L (mm) x 7.85

Where T is the symbol for the steel thickness, W represents the width and L is the length of the coil. The number 7.85 is the density of iron in mathematics.

Grade (Hardness)

If thickness was a reflection of the steel's appearance, then hardness would be a measure of the strength for galvalume steel coils. High hardness means that the strength of steel is extremely good and it also shows durability. However, higher hardness also makes the steel become more difficult to handle in machining and design applications. People usually will rely on 3 criteria to evaluate the hardness of steel including: Tensile, Yield Strength and Elongation.

Yield Strength

The manufacturer will put the steel in a specialized machine and start pulling at the 2 heads of the steel, at a certain force when the steel begins to deform, the manufacturer will rely on that to record the Yield Strength of the product.


If Yield Strength reflects the time to deform of steel, then Tensile will be the proof of the maximum strength of a steel product. When the tension between the two heads reaches a large enough to make the steel break at this point, it is called Tensile. Currently, the unit of measure applied to both Yield Strength and Tensile is MPA (N/m2).


Elongation is a measure of the distance between the beginning deformed position to the point of failure, it is calculated based on the ratio between Yield Strength and Tensile. If the percentage of Elon is large, it shows that the steel is ductile and easy to form up. Whereas the percentage of Elon is low, it means that the steel is hard and brittle, the steel structure is extremely solid but it will interfere with shaping.

In addition, the steel hardness parameters shown on the information table are usually calculated based on the minimum force impact. More specifically, if the Yield Strength parameter is G300, when testing the steel standard, the manufacturer will have to use a minimum force of 300 Newtons to deform the steel.

Color ID

One color tone will have many different color shades, so learning the color code before implementing trade will help importers avoid the risk of receiving wrong colors. During the negotiation process between the two parties, the manufacturer will often send to customers a RAL color system with certain symbols on them. When the customer reports the color code, the manufacturer will base on the customer's color requirements to mix the paint color.

Commodity classification in galvalume steel coil specification

HS Code

HS is a commodity classification code that is applied to all countries, so when conducting commercial transactions between two countries, understanding the HS Code is the necessary action in determining the category of goods.

Conventional iron and steel products refer to the first 2 digits as 72, the following numbers will classify in more detail the width as well as the thickness of the steel coil. The most common HS Code of galvalume coils today is denoted by 8 digits 72107013.

Country of origin & Brand Name

One of the last galvalume steel coil specifications that importers need to pay attention to is information about the origin of the product.
