Steel export situation in January 2024According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, as of January 2024, Vietnam's steel exports have increased for 4 consecutive months, reaching more than 1.16 million tons with a value of 822.65 million USD, an increase of 7.1% in price and 7.4% in value compared to the previous month; increased by 72.6% in volume and 80% y/y in 2023. The average export steel price also increased by 0.3% over the previous month and increased by 3.9% over the same period in 2023, to 709 USD/ton.2. The average imported steel price reached 712 USD/ton, down 3.9% over the previous month and down 19.7% over the same period in 2023.Steel scrap imports in January 2024 also decreased after 3 consecutive months of increase, reaching 356,301 tons with a value of 140.96 million USD, down 18.8% in volume and 9.6% in value compared to the previous month. The average price of imported scrap steel reached 396 USD/ton, up 11.3% over the previous month and up 2.7% over the same period in 2023.3. Positive expectations for the steel industry in 2024The above positive results raise high hopes for the steel export market in 2024. Export volume in the following months can maintain growth thanks to a positive global demand outlook. According to the World Steel Association, world steel demand is expected to increase by 1.9% in 2024, demand from developed countries is expected to increase by 2.8%, of which the US and Europe will increase by 5.8% and 1.6%, respectively. On the other hand, steel demand of ASEAN countries (except Vietnam) is expected to increase by 5.2% in 2024, up 1.4% compared to 2023.It is expected that Vietnam's steel export output will improve in the first quarter due to the increasing difference between prices in North America and Europe compared to steel prices in Vietnam. In addition, Europe also issued sanctions and strictly controlled the import of semi-finished steel products from Russia while supporting the import of Vietnamese steel.

Recently, Pomina Steel plans to consider increasing the investment level of the Pomina 3 blast furnace project to VND 5,800 billion. At the same time, the company wants to establish a new legal entity with a strategic investor to comprehensively restructure the business.Pomina Steel Joint Stock Company has just announced the 2024 Extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders documents with some notable content. Specifically, this steel manufacturer will submit to shareholders for review and approval of the settlement approval proposal and increase the blast furnace investment at Pomina 3 by more than 904 billion VND to nearly 5,880 billion VND. This additional adjustment is equivalent to an increase of 18% compared to the initial expected investment level. Pomina Steel Board of Directors requests shareholders to review, approve, and approve the above proposal so that the company can complete the project procedures.The Pomina 3 blast furnace has been deployed since 2019 and put into production in February 2012. In the past year, 2023, the country produced a staggering 1,019 million tons, sustaining its production at a stable level after two consecutive years of decline. According to analysts from S&P Global Commodity Insights, China's steel production is anticipated to decrease by 0.5% in 2024 as domestic plants seek solutions to address excess supply issues along with weak profit margins. Similarly, the second-largest steel producer in Europe, Italy, also exhibited a 2.5% reduction in production to 21.06 million tons.The simultaneous decline in steel production can be attributed to low consumption demand and high energy prices, presenting challenges for factories in the region. The steel industry in Europe is grappling with high production costs due to increased energy prices since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, alongside an influx of cheaper imported products that impose limitations on local steel manufacturers.The production downturn is not limited to domestic output; steel exports to the EU also witnessed a 5.57% reduction in 2023 compared to the same period. However, the growth rate of steel exports to new markets, including Western Asia and Central Asia, experienced a substantial increase. The persistence of inflationary cycles and the strong impact of trade protectionism are considered the primary impediments to steel exports from other countries to this region. 

Turkey is planning an expansion to enhance its steel production capacity, aiming to lead Europe in the coming years.Turkey holds a prominent position in the global steel production and export market. The country's steel industry has gained recognition for manufacturing high-quality steel products and making continuous efforts to expand its capacity while incorporating advanced technologies into production. With its strategic geographical location, including an extensive Mediterranean coastline, Turkey currently produces and supplies steel primarily to the European market.The steel industry in Turkey comprises privately owned companies that continually strive for technological advancements and competitiveness in the market. The iron and steel sector is the third-largest contributor to the Turkish economy, reflecting significant development in recent years. While Turkey's steel exports increased in the first six months of 2022, they sharply declined in the second half of the year. According to the CIB, the total volume of Turkey's steel exports decreased by about 50% in the fourth quarter of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. The main reasons for this decline are primarily attributed to the impact of the Ukraine conflict, inflation, high energy prices, and a global decrease in steel consumption. Particularly, the demand for steel imports from Europe has significantly reduced, while the EU has accounted for approximately 30% of Turkey's steel industry total steel export volume in the past 5 years.Therefore, recently, Turkey has set the goal of becoming the leading country in steel production within the EU in the near future. Alongside efforts to achieve the set objectives, the Director-General of the European Steel Association (EUROFER) emphasizes the challenges that the Turkish steel industry must confront, especially in the face of an energy crisis, high production costs, and inflation, which have added difficulties to steel manufacturing. Furthermore, the transition to carbon reduction processes is underway, and accessing non-fossil fuel energy at affordable prices is crucial for the Turkish steel industry to maintain global competitiveness. The President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) stated that the application of protective measures for steel products could allow the full utilization of domestic capacity, enhance export opportunities and contribute to reducing the steel industry's deficit. Additionally, it is seen as an opportunity to generate added value and provide additional employment within the country. Moreover, there is hope that Turkey's steel industry will regain its position as the largest steel producer in the Middle East, with strategic steps planned for 2024 and even stronger growth expected in 2025.
