The common criterias for evaluating construction steel

The most important factor of a sustainable building is the source of quality construction steel. Depending on the property of each project, the contractor will choose some criterias to evaluate construction steel. Below is a list of common criteria for evaluating the quality of construction steel.

Construction steel quality standards

There are countless different types of steel on the market today, in order to create a common uniformity in the steel production process, quality standards have been issued. Manufacturing mills will often rely on these quality standards to adjust the specifications to ensure the quality of the steel grade is in the best condition.

Three common quality standards including Vietnamese, American and Japanese standards are applied to steel constructions such as plain bar and rebar. In which, when the product meets Vietnamese standards, construction steel is considered as standard steel and is completely suitable for construction projects.

TCVN - Vietnam steel standard

Vietnam confirms quality standards for steel grades is abbreviated in the form of TCVN, of which there are 4 general standards: TCVN 1651-1:2008, TCVN 1811_2009 (ISO 14284-1996), TCVN 6287_1997, TCVN 7937-1-2013.

The plain bar steel used to make reinforced concrete and on each of them are marked CB240-T, CB300-T and CB400-T. Similar to plain bar steel, rebar steel also owns 3 standard steel grades including CB300-V, CB400-V, CB500-V, CB600-V. The numbers in the symbol will represent the strength of the steel. Specifically, the CB300-T series will indicate the value of strength is up to 300N/mm2, meaning that a steel bar with a cross section of 1mm2 will withstand a tensile force of up to 300N (equivalent to 30kg).

ASTM - American steel standard

The American Standard is identified by its common abbreviation ASTM, will focus on key topics such as specifications, testing, and grading guidelines. The American standard applied in the current range of construction concrete steels is ASTM A615/A615M with 3 steel grades including GR40, GR60 and GR75.

Most steel grades according to American standards are highly appreciated for their outstanding hardness when all 3 steel grades GR40, GR60 and GR75 possess tensile strengths of 420 MPa, 620MPa and 695MPa. Having the high tensile strength will be a plus point of this standard for building framing applications because they provide extremely good loading.

JIS - Japanese steel standard

The Japanese standard is also one of the familiar standards in the steel industry with the abbreviation JIS. Currently, two popular Japanese standards are applied in construction steel including JIS G3505 - 1996, JIS G3112 - 1987.

Construction steel specification

Another important criterion in the selection of construction steel is the appropriate size including diameter, length and volume. Knowing the construction steel diameter will help the contractor easily calculate the required volume of construction steel for the project, especially for large projects that always require meticulousness and calculation in detail.

If the contractor is not careful in choosing the right size, it is easy to make the structure weak because of unbalanced transmission forces in some loading parts. Famous construction steel suppliers in the Vietnam market such as Hoa Phat, Pomina, Viet Italy, ... are at risk of being faked as poor quality versions. Normally, the fake version of construction steel will have a smaller size from 0.5 - 0.8mm than the authentic one.

Steel origin and the market price

The standard steels must be the steel lines having clear origin, usually the manufacturer will attach labels showing characteristic symbols and brand names on each steel bundle.

In addition, quality construction steels from reputable brands will always have a fixed price and the retail price will be listed from the manufacturer. If the price of steel is too low compared to the factory's selling price, it means that the quality of the steel will not be guaranteed.

Quality construction steel must come from a reputable supplier

Besides considering the quality criteria, choosing a reputable steel supplier is also an important factor to help get good construction steel. MRS Steel as an expert in providing steel solutions for importers will be the ideal partner to accompany you in the process of searching and trading products.

During many years of operations, MRS Steel has made many close relationships with major domestic manufacturers. Therefore, we ensure that the supplied steel source fully meets the quality standards with CO/CQ certificates. In addition, MRS Steel also owns a team of experienced staff specializing in updating steel price lists weekly, which will help importers have transparency about the price of products, thereby having the basic data to adjust the reasonable trading plan.
